The Other Project

La Línea present:

Fear is Effective

in a lecture with Omar Pimienta
8:30-10:00 am on Wednesday 9/12 as a part of
The Other Project

"In times when our country and its institutions are committed to a thorough re-evaluation and re-assessment of "The Other" through military campaigns, the building of walls South of the Border, the rhetoric of presidential hopefuls, landmark Supreme Court rulings, and the re-imagining of immigration policy and FAA standards, this project takes on the same preoccupations from the context of a refugee tent on a hill in suburban Valencia, a half hour away from Los Angeles."

--
Evelyn Serrano (organizer of The Other Project)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The refugee tent, originally designed to provide temporary shelter at emergency sites in Afghanistan and other parts of the world, will be set up on one of the hills in FireValley, an un-developed lot adjacent to the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) school buildings. The organizer will move in the tent with her IKEA furniture, her grandmother's crystal vase and other domestic paraphernalia and will inhabit this tent (to the best of her ability) for five days. During this period, the tent and the surrounding area will serve as a context for a series of conversations, forums, performances, workshops and readings. The events will be lead by a wonderful group of inspired visual artists, writers, anthropologists, musicians, performers, community leaders, activists, curators and educators. The formal gesture of bringing together "under the same roof" two contrasting paradigms will serve to frame the events that will take place at the site.

Organizer:

Evelyn Serrano is a Cuban visual artist, educator, administrator, and independent curator. She is also the mother of a very inquisitive four year old boy. Evelyn received her B.F.A. degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore and her M.F.A. degree from the California Institute of the Arts. Prior to that, she attended courses on visual arts, design, history, aesthetics and literature in Havana, Montevideo and Miami. Evelyn is currently the Assitant Director of Programs at the CalArts Community Arts Partnership. She has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally. Evelyn is honored to have worked with many talented visual artists, writers and performers in several exhibitions and art events she has curated in the US and abroad.

El Amor en del Norte

Proserpine est amoreuse
Proserpina está enamorada:
Monterrey y Tijuana

Proserpine is in Love:
Monterrey y Tijuana
Love in Northern Times

Explanation:
The spring of poets is an event which has gained the specific interest of the intellectual community in the city of Monterrey (México). On one hand, it acts as a forum for distinct voices and ideas about the ways in which the arts manifest themselves in one of the most advanced cities in the country. On the other hand, it assembles a diverse audience, which participates in the process of the conceptualization of quotidian themes in an artistic environment. A process , which in the end, involves the cognitive and the emotive: revelation. This year, the event locates itself within the “Leterea Amoroso” of the French writer, René Char. The participating artists will explore the theme of love in its multiplicity of meanings. The 100th anniversary of René Char offers an occasion for France and México to expand their ties through poetry, as well as other literary genres which share poetic language. A gesture similar to the legacy left by Char and Octavio Paz, which has permeated Mexican poetics with the concepts of the Surrealist Avante Garde
